Hentai Hump-Day! RPG Maker MV Games

This is going to be a short one, but hopefully a little illuminating.

HumpdayRPG Maker MV was officially released only a couple of months ago, but the hentai world works quickly.  And… sloppily.  So far, I’ve played two MV hentai games and am looking forward to one.

There is a huge amount of RPG Maker hentai games out there, mostly done in VX Ace.  They all have varying amounts of originality and effort put into them.  Many of them simply use the default battle system, making for an uninteresting adventure most of the time, but there are those that make up for it by having more interesting adventuring and questing mechanics.  Many use custom battle systems and are awesome for it.  And several really go all out with custom everything, including menus.

Whatever the case, one thing remains true: it takes TIME to make those games.  That’s why it’s normal to feel apprehension when you see a new MV game up within the month of release.  Such is the case of Battle Slave Nina, quite possibly the first hentai game ever made via RPG Maker MV.  It’s… short.  And most likely incomplete, as many RPG Maker projects tend to be.

Half these girls aren't even in the game.

After a short and not particularly detailed intro, you find yourself playing as Nina, a sex slave who basically gets fucked to gain experience or gold.  That’s… pretty much all there is.

As a game, it’s pretty bare bones and simplistic.  There’s really no challenge for the most part.  I haven’t figured out the ultimate goal of the game, and honestly, I don’t particularly give a fuck.  There are only 12 sex scenes in the entire game, four of them repeat CG from another scene, and six of them you can get in the first map.  And I don’t mean that in a larger sense of a localized area; I mean the first fucking screen.

Through this menu alone, you can access 6 of 12 of the game's total H-scenes right away. That's fucking depressing.

You can earn gold to buy items and equipment, but I have yet to encounter a single battle, so it’s like who gives a fuck.  Let’s move on.

The second MV game I’ve seen is Il Mare ~ The Sea Pirates of Deep Blue.  It’s a more traditional RPG in that you can actually explore and battle some fairly generic enemies.  It’s rather easy in that most of the skills use TP, and it’s very lenient on how much TP you gain in battle.

Personally, I fucking hate how many RPG Maker games have a title screen that looks like a fucking advertisement.

Also pretty short and lacks in CG, but definitely more polished as a game than Battle Slave Nina.  One problem I have with it though is that it has some really sloppy battle actions.  Like, I literally did better in VX Ace, and that wasn’t built for side view animations.  It really only takes half an hour of testing to see that your battle actions match the animations.  They were in a rush.

It should be obvious that MV games have a lot of kinks to work out before we can start getting quality titles.  Once it happens, it’ll be great for several reasons.  Number 1 is the higher resolution of images.  That’s just a no-brainer improvement for hentai games.  Number 2 is the fact that you can control the game with your mouse; VX Ace required that you use a keyboard.  With MV, you really only need your right hand because your mouse controls your character’s movements, actions, and menus.  The ability to onehand a hentai RPG is a serious gamechanger.

Now, there’s one MV title I’m actually looking forward to.  It’s the title currently being worked on by Scalegarden, the creator of Seiren Harp, Fire and Metal’s Breath, and Rhode’s Fortress. Scalegarden is something of an innovator when it comes to RPG Maker H-games; his last three titles used unique battle systems that actually required strategy, and every one of his titles actually made it fun and challenging to find and collect every H-scene you could trigger.  Rhode’s Fortress had some particularly interesting ideas implemented, like crawl mode, appeal mode, and dynamic dressing, and having events with different triggers depending on your current state.  Plus, he started to really experiment with animation.  Rhode’s Fortress ended up being disappointingly short with the lowest amount of CG out of any of his projects, but he’s put a lot more time into his latest project… so much so that he switched to MV after working on XP for a year.  Yep, he didn’t even work with VX Ace; he did all his stuff on RPG Maker XP up ’til now.  That’s fucking impressive.

I, for one, welcome our new 800x600 overlords.

Sorry it wasn’t much of a post, but I really wanted to cover the current state of MV.  Long story short: give it some time.  Don’t bother with anything coming out in the next three months.  But when we start getting some big hitters down the line… we are in for a treat, I guarantee you.
